RJH

Dear Parents/Carers,

Next week we will be learning about Chinese New Year and our activities will be based on this. We will also be reading the story of ‘The Magic Paintbrush’ by Julia Donaldson and talking about kindness and ways to help others. In Maths, we will continue to learn about the composition of numbers to three and the way that whole numbers can be split into parts – e.g. that 3 can be made with 2 and 1, 1 and 1 and 1……

Phonics

In phonics, we will be re-capping the sounds learnt so far. As we begin to learn the trickier digraphs, alongside consolidating our learning of the previous sounds, the pace that we learn the sounds will sometimes slow to ensure that the children are secure in what has been learnt. Next week we will focus on our new sounds ‘ch’ and ‘sh’.

Show and Tell

For ‘Show and Tell’, please can the children find out a fact about ‘Chinese New Year’. They can draw a picture, if they would like.

Book Levels

Please do not concern yourself with which level book your child has been placed on. The books in our school come from a few different schemes and have been broadly placed into colour bands based on the phonetic difficulty of the book (and not necessarily related to the level given on the book). However, some books within a colour band will be more difficult, easy, longer, shorter, contain more sight words which can’t be sounded out …. and the teacher will have chosen a book which they feel is appropriate for your child.

The children are all different ages (the age of a child within a year, at this point, makes a huge difference) and will be learning at different rates. Please remember that the children need to understand what they are reading too, so we will not move children through the colour bands if they are not able to comprehend what they have read.

Words

We will check through the first set of high frequency words next week on the children’s Reading / ’Show and Tell’ days. They will get a new set if they have learnt the first set. They are not expected to spell the words, just read them. Please do not worry if your child has not learnt them, as they all learn at different rates and some children are better at reading phonetically, while others are better at learning whole words.

Friday 25th February - History Day

Each year group at BHCPS will learn about a significant historical event and the children can come dressed up as a person who was at the event. In Reception, we will be learning about the first Olympic Games in Ancient Greece, so you can begin thinking about the children’s costumes (e.g. a piece of sheet tied in the middle)!

P.E.

P.E. will take place on a Tuesday and Thursday. Please send your child into school in their P.E. kit on those days, being mindful of the weather, as the children will remain in their kit all day.

Absence

If your child has a persistent cough and/or a high temperature then please keep them at home and read the school website for further guidance. If your child is absent with sickness or diarrhea, please keep them at home for 48 hours after the last episode. For any absence, please call the school office to let us know ahead of the school day.

Dear Parents/Carers,

Continuing with our theme ‘People Who Help Us’, next week we will be learning about the fire service. In relation to this we will be reading ‘Super Sid ’ by Sam Lloyd which is a lovely story about a heroic dog.  In Maths, we will be learning about the composition of numbers to three and the way that whole numbers can be split into parts – e.g. that 3 can be made with 2 and 1, 1 and 1 and 1……

Phonics

In phonics, we will continue to re-cap the sounds learnt so far and will begin to learn the sounds ‘ch’ and ‘sh’. We refer to these sounds as digraphs, with two letters making one sound.

Show and Tell

For ‘Show and Tell’, please can the children learn a fact about the fire service or a piece of equipment that a firefighter would use.

Snack Money

We ask for a voluntary donation of £5 per half-term to purchase additional snack items such as rice cakes, breadsticks and biscuits and to contribute to classroom activities, such as cooking or items such as spare pants or special craft materials. Please put the donation in an envelope and give to the class teacher or put in your child’s book bag. If you’ve already made a large contribution for the year, do not worry.

Words

Next week, children will begin to bring home high frequency words to learn. They will be checked once a week on their reading day. If they have learnt all the words, they will get a new set. We will not issue new sets of words if they can’t read all of the words previously sent home, otherwise it can become overwhelming. Thank you for your support in learning the words as we find it really improves fluency and accelerates their reading.

P.E.

P.E. will take place on a Tuesday and Thursday.

Reception Newsletter Thursday 6th January

Dear Parents / Carers,

Thank you to everyone who came to watch the Christmas Shows. The children did really well to learn so many songs, actions and lines and we hoped that you enjoyed their efforts. They looked fantastic in their costumes.

Thank you for all our cards, presents and Christmas wishes; we really appreciate them.

Show and Tell

For ‘Show and Tell’, please can the children show the homework they have been set for the Christmas break – see below.

Holiday Homework

Every child across the school has been set the same piece of homework for the Christmas holiday. We have asked them to draw a picture of themselves and to write their name, the language/s they speak at home and how they celebrate Christmas. If they do not celebrate Christmas, children can write about a different family tradition or something that they do celebrate. We are looking forward to seeing all the completed work displayed in the school hall in January.

Next week is very busy with the Christmas Jumper and Pyjama Days, as well as our Christmas shows. The children will also be doing lots of Christmas crafts, activities, songs, rhymes and stories.

For ‘Show and Tell’, please can the children talk about something that they do at Christmas, a family tradition or a special treat or outing that you have planned, e.g. visiting relatives, leaving a carrot for Rudolph, hanging a stocking, playing board games. If you do not celebrate Christmas, it can be something else that you do in the holidays.

Next week, we will be recapping the sounds learnt so far with a focus on blending the sounds.

Reception Newsletter 4th November

Dear Parents/Carers,

After the half term break, we will be continuing with our ‘rhyme’ theme and our first rhyme will be ‘London Bridge is Falling Down’.

Show and Tell

For ‘Show and Tell’ please can the children tell us about something they have done over the half term break. They can draw a picture of something they’ve been doing or can bring in a photo if they would like.

Reading

We apologise for not putting the letter-sounds to practise in the children’s bags but were awaiting a delivery of card. There should be some in their bags by the end of the week.

Phonics

This week we have been learning the sounds ‘d’ and ‘g’, and have been recapping ‘s’,’a’,’t’,’p’,’i’,’n’ and m. After the half term we will spend the first week recapping what has been learnt so far.

Birthday Treats

We have decided, due to the many different dietary requirements across Reception and parental concerns, that it will no longer be possible for children to bring in treats on their birthday. Obviously, we monitor very closely the snacks we provide for children during the school day but we cannot take responsibility for items kindly sent in by parents.

P.E.

PE will take place on a Tuesday and Thursday. Please send your child into school in their PE kit on those days, being mindful of the weather, as the children will remain in their kit all day.

Welly Walks

These take place on a Wednesday but, please note, this is dependent on a number of factors, including the number of staff available to carry out the walk, the weather and other activities which children are participating in. It may also take place on a different day which is why we request a pair of wellies stay in school.

We are delighted with how well the children are continuing to settle into school; they managed a full day, with lunch and the playground, brilliantly yesterday.

Show and Tell

Next week, our focus rhyme is ‘The Grand Old Duke of York’. For ‘Show and Tell’, please can the children learn the rhyme. If they would like to create a picture or bring in an associated item to show the class, e.g. a toy soldier, book with the rhyme…then they can.

School Photographer – Friday 1st October

The school photographer will be taking the Reception children’s individual photographs this Friday 1st October. If they have siblings in school, they will also have their photos taken with them.

Curriculum Meeting for Parents – Tuesday 5th October, 9.00 am.

We will be holding our first curriculum meeting for parents next week. This meeting will focus on phonics, but we will also provide information regarding what we will be covering this term. We will send the slides out by ParentMail and will also put them on the Class Pages for anyone unable to attend.

We look forward to seeing you then!

Cardboard Tubes

Please can you send in any cardboard kitchen roll tubes that you have at home, for our craft next week! Thanks.

Book Bags

Please can children bring in their book bags daily; they will be placed outside the classrooms for collection at the end of the day.

Reading

We will read with the children and change their books on their ‘Show and Tell’ day. Please share the book with your child, asking them to describe/answer questions about what is happening in each picture. If the book has words, encourage them to point at each word and repeat it after you. They might be able to recognise a few letter-sounds or find a particular letter-sound/word on each page. Please write a comment in their reading diary every week so that we know they have read. Soon, your child will also begin to bring home letter-sounds and words to practise at home. We read with the children once per week, on their given day.

P.E.

PE will take place on a Tuesday and Thursday from next week. Please send your child into school in their PE kit on those days, being mindful of the weather, as the children will remain in their kit all day.

Welly Walks

These take place on a Wednesday, weather permitting, and will begin next week. Please ensure your child has a pair of labelled wellies, to remain in school.

Labelling uniform

Please ensure that your child’s clothes are labelled as it makes it impossible for us to match a jumper/cardigan to a child without it.

Snack Money

We ask for a voluntary donation of £5 per half-term to purchase additional snack items such as rice cakes, breadsticks and biscuits and to contribute to classroom activities, such as cooking, or additional items such as spare pants or special craft materials. Please put the donation in an envelope and give to the class teacher or put in your child’s book bag. Thanks to those who have already made a donation, it’s greatly appreciated.

Water Bottles

Children have access to water throughout the day, so do not worry about sending in bottles, as they tend to leak in the bags.

Absence

If your child has a persistent cough and/or a high temperature then please keep them at home and read the school website for further guidance. If your child is absent with sickness or diarrhea, please keep them at home for 48 hours after the last episode. Reception Newsletter - 15th September

Dear Parents/Carers,

It has been lovely to welcome the children into Reception this week and to get to know them all.

Each week we will post a newsletter on the school website and it will also get sent to you via Parent Mail. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to speak to either Mrs James or Mrs Stephens.

Each class has a class page which is in the ‘Children’ section of the school website.

https://www.buckhursthillprimary.co.uk/class-pages/

Book Bags

Please can children start to bring in their book bags daily; they will be placed outside the classrooms for collection at the end of the day.

Show and Tell

Each week, your child will be asked to either show or talk about something to the rest of the class, relating to our learning (don’t worry, they get lots of help with this and no one is forced to say anything if they don’t want to). We will post the children’s ‘Show and Tell’ day outside the classrooms and on the ‘Class Page’ by the end of the week. We will begin ‘Show and Tell’ week beginning 27th October.

Reading

We will read with the children and change their books on their ‘Show and Tell’ day. Every child will begin with the same level book, which will be picture books or will have just a few words on each page. Your child will be put onto the appropriate level in the next few weeks. Please share the book with your child, asking them to describe/answer questions about what is happening in each picture. Encourage them to point at each word and repeat it after you. They might be able to recognise a few letter-sounds or find a particular letter-sound/word on each page. Please write a comment in their reading diary every week so that we know they have read. Soon, your child will also begin to bring home letter-sounds and words to practise at home. We read with the children once per week, on their given day.

Outside Area

We are very proud of our outdoor classroom. Please can you refrain from allowing your child and their siblings to use the resources in the outdoor area before and after school.

P.E.

P.E. will take place on a Tuesday and Thursday from week beginning Monday 4th October. Please send your child into school in their PE kit on those days, being mindful of the weather, as the children will remain in their kit all day.

Labelling uniform

Please ensure that your child’s clothes are labelled as it makes it impossible for us to match a jumper/cardigan to a child without it.
